Artist’s statement: Angela Briggs – New paintings at Sarah Walters Gallery
My practice has recently taken shape around exploring how to create pockets of time for deep thought in a busy life. Responding to the extraordinary in the everyday, these paintings articulate something about my experience of some of the natural spaces I love in Cape Town – Redhill Dam, Silvermine Dam, Venus Pool, Longkloof.
The quiet concentration of the painting process, and the time it takes, are embodied in the works.
The decision to the exhibit in the Ceramic was spontaneous, but an easy one – hand-made ceramics contain the same focus, and there is a meditative quality to both the ceramics and the paintings that creates a natural link between the two types of work.
There’s another organic link that I hope will resonate with viewers – in the way that the rockyness and wateriness of some of the places I have painted speak to the earth and water that is fundamental to making ceramics.
