Desire: Possess or be Possessed

The Annual Winter Solstice Exhibition has the overarching theme of ‘Desire: to possess or be possessed’ is Dalinian. Within this context the exhibition is a celebration of the Winter Solstice.

It was suggested that participating artists consider an agrarian Greek myth in which Persephone was carried away and ravished by Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, leaving behind her distraught mother Demeter. The events in the myth describe actions taken by the Olympian gods and goddesses causing the great cycle of the four seasons and the human span of birth, life, and death.

This exhibition Desire: Possess or be Possessed is intended to showcase a casual association of artists whose differing points of view will entertain the audience, while also challenging their perceptions.

That Judy Woodborne is a mistress of caprice and student of all that is arcane is evidenced in the contributions ‘Study 1/1’. ’Soul food 1/1’ and ‘Bower, Persephone’s Garden’. Marike Kleynsheldt’s ‘Elegy’ & ‘Suspend’ are bright ravels of shiny ribbons reflecting a state of being. Leon de Bliquy’s lucid stone lithographs pay homage to the Nobel Prize-winning Greek poet Odysseus Elytis and reference his poem ‘The mad pomegranate tree’ (see image above).

Peter van Straten’s ‘On waiting on the milk of human kindness and ‘A moment of perfect balance’ carry the promise of new life, while Simon Jones’s ambiguous ‘Lux Aeterna’, composed while listening to Beethoven’s grandiose mass, and Rachelle Bomberg’s ‘Errant Spirit’, touch subtly upon the sacred and profane. In a more humorous vein, Xolile Mtakatya’s ‘Departure ‘explores the social mores of township life. Drummond Murphy’s ‘Favorite things’ speak through, and of possessions, while David Kuijer’s ‘Do You Know how Much?’ is the epitome of Desire!
