Anton Smit – Landscape of the Soul – will be unveiled as a new feature on the Century City Arts Trail on the 19 September. On the Sanlam Arts Round Up, John Chapman, Chair of the Century City Arts Foundation, gives us a glimpse of what to expect.

John explains that initially, the focus at Century City was on bricks and mortar. 18 years ago, the Century City Arts Foundation, a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) was created to foster the arts. A city was being established and as it matured it required that extra layer to promote a sense of a community. Initially these were baby steps that adorned public spaces. Programmes reached out to schools, artists in townships, and other projects that produced 35 exhibits, forming an open air art exhibition, that included murals and graffiti.

Realising that Century City had 8.5km of waterways and Intaka Island, a 16 hectare wild reserve, there was space to create an Arts Trail for people to more fully enjoy the landscape.
An exciting development was when 2 years ago, the Foundation entered into a rental agreement with Anton Smit and 30 sculptures were added to the trail. This was so successful that the lease has been extended. The photo above, and to the left, are some of Anton’s work that can be seen.
A competition was held for another art project, and Anton Smit was the winner. The result, Landscape of the Soul, is what will be unveiled on 19 September. It is described as a 33-metre length of pedestrian walkway, which forms part of the Trail. Various sizes of fragmented masks, each of which are securely mounted on the wall in staggered series, form a lyrical wave of identity.
