Heading for the Franschhoek Literary Festival? Then here are some things to add to your must-get-to list while you are in Franschhoek or en route to the village.

The opening of ‘Evidence’, a solo exhibition of paintings by Odette Marais at Ebony/Curated at their Bordeaux House Gallery is nicely timed for 5:00pm to 7:00m, after you’ve had a busy day of book talks. There’s even the add-on benefit of drinks and canapés! Look around the gallery to see what other treasures are on view in the various exhibition spaces.Art and about, Ebony/Curated,

Head towards the Huguenot Monument, and at Franschhoek Square you will find the other branch of Ebony/Curated, with an extensive and selective range of furnishings and other delights, besides an extensive range of South African art – from old masters to very contemporary. Their Ardmore store is a treasure chest of selected ceramic pieces as well as the full range of Ardmore Design incorporating fabrics, cushions, tableware and furniture from this exceptional KwaZulu Natal resource. Lots of surprises including a newly launched Pierneef Furniture Range and Clementina van der Walt’s fresh Pastel range of functional ceramics. Plus of course a selection of historical and contemporary paintings and sculptures by some of South Africa’s rising and most contemporary and historical established artists.

Keep on walking towards the Huguenot Monument and visit Art@Africa Sculpture Garden, featuring 3-dimensional installations by South African artists. The unique site features a trail that wind through flowers and exquisite views over Franschhoek Valley. The sculptors Marke Meyer, Theresa Jo, Marco, Janko de Beer, Kunye, Pollux and Andre Prinsloo, will be found in the Sculpture Garden. (see lead photo above)

On your way to or from Franschhoek, you might have time to stop by at the Rupert Museum to  see the new installation by renowned land artist Strijdom van der Merwe. This will be the first of three artist interventions planned for the exhibition. and viewing is only from Wednesday, 17 May 2023. The exhibition AbstRacT – the hidden synchrony will be transformed with this brand new and unique installation “Skaafsels”. In this installation van der Merwe is looking at the organic lines found in Oscar Forel’s macro-photographs on tree bark and turning the closeup view around with the scale envisioned for this installation.

Lots to enjoy at the FLF – and be sure to get art and about!
