Few things remain as contested in contemporary South Africa as space and place – the focus of two art exhibitions at Lovell Gallery.
From questions around land and ownership, to alienation and displacement to struggles over personal and public space, two new art exhibitions address these themes from different perspectives. No Place Like Now brings together artists such as Neville Petersen, Killigan Kristine Kronje, Hanrie van Heerden, Tamlin Blake, Neill Wright and Ronel de Jager to question the relationship between place and memory, and place and identity. The exhibition runs alongside Emma Willemse’s (dis)place, which continues her obsession with home and displacement, using materials found in demolished houses.
