Art: Popping painting’s cherry

At Blank Projects, Zimbabwe-born, South African-based Kerry Chaloner’s new art exhibition, First Time, pokes fun at abstract painting in its masculine, modernist hangover.

By turns digressive, obsessive, overblown, romantic and fickle, it features a series of deliciously pink abstract paintings bundled together with a few sculptures, as well as video works.  Chaloner, who worked in fashion before turning to art, is well versed in gender stereotyping.  Here she manipulates feminine tropes to pop painting’s proverbial cherry.
