Artscape Youth Jazz Festival 19 June

The Youth Jazz programme is a  celebration of Young Achievers and recognises the mentors and educators in the Jazz Industry!

Artscape’s youth month will be celebrated this year from 10 June to 11 July 2015. During this time hundreds of young artists from various multicultural arts disciplines will have the opportunity to perform their stimulating and important works on the Artscape stages together with many well-known artists.

The highlight of this month is the Youth Jazz Festival.

It celebrates its 13th year with nine soloist who successfully auditioned to be included in a mentorship programme. It culminates with the jazz festival on 19 June 2015 at 19.30 in the Artscape Theatre.

It was initiated by Artscape in recognition of the enormous amount of raw talent nationally, particularly in Cape Town where there is a Jazz tradition.  The mentorship programme for bands began in 2005.  After auditions musicians received master classes with acclaimed jazz icons from the Western Cape.  The programme prepared them for the challenging arts arena they had entered and gave them respect for their role models who paved the way for them. In past years auditions were held for bands but now the concentration is on the individual musicians who audition to participate in the programme.

It is a unique opportunity where the musicians have been able to take this programme forward into their careers and educate others in the process.’

‘Artscape continues to raise the standard each year through the dedication and passion of highly respected and acclaimed professional musicians and educators who not only mentor these young artists but ensures the continuity of the jazz tradition in the Western Cape.
