by | Jun 13, 2014 | News | 0 comments

Celebrating Young Achievers in the year of our Democracy is the theme for the 12th annual Youth Jazz Festival  at Artscape Theatre on Friday 13 June at 19:30.

The Youth Jazz Festival features eight young jazz musicians whose exceptional talent and achievements have been recognised.  They are vocalists Amy Campbell (22) Ndumiso Manana (22), Zoe Palesa Modiga (20) and Candice Thornton (23). Siya Charles (23) plays the Trombone, Matthew Ehrenreich Saxophone, Robin Fassie-Kock (21) Trumpet and Mark Williams (25) Guitar.

Directed by celebrated musicians and educators Amanda Tiffin and Camillo Lombard they form a jazz ensemble to accompany the soloists with acclaimed Peter Ndlala (Base Guitar) and Mornay Hoffmeester (Drums).

Keeping the arts alive and paving the way for the next generation of young artists, this concert reflects the very high standard of jazz talent in the Western Cape and upholds the legacy of freedom given to us by the late Nelson Mandela. It is produced by Artscape in collaboration with Distell Foundation and support from the HCI Foundation for bus transport.

Marlene le Roux, director of Artscape Audience Development and Education explains that each year the festival is designed around a mentorship programmes firmly structured on development and education.  Some of the 2014 soloists have participated in the previous challenging and rewarding programmes.

Says le Roux; ‘We believe the arts play a vital role in laying the foundation for an open society, based on the democratic values of our constitution. We are honoured to showcase these young musicians and the jazz ensemble to celebrate our Democracy. Artscape acknowledges the mentors in the past who passionately contributed to the success and dignity of the young musicians. Many are currently performing successfully on South African and  international stages. Dreams do come true.”
