Coinciding with the Investec Cape Town Art Fair

Aspire Art has lined up an exciting and varied series of exhibitions from Thursday 17 to  Sunday 20 that coincides with the Investec Cape Town Art Fair.

SUBJECT: Locating Meaning

SUBJECT: Locating Meaning, is an exhibition that broadly explores the subject in art, as it refers to the main idea, theme and inherent meaning of an artwork.

The essence of any artwork is located in its particular subject – its meaning shaped by the creative and conceptual intentions of the artist. Looking at a selection of 20th Century and Contemporary South African and African works of art, the exhibition reveals some of the most prevalent topics artists on the continent have engaged with (be they personal or socio-political) and depicted through portraiture, landscape, still-life, abstraction as well as genre and new media works.

Featuring: Marlene Dumas, William Kentridge, George Pemba, Sydney Kumalo, Dumile Feni, George Lilanga, Robert Hodgins, Penny Siopis, Ayana V. Jackson, Sam Nhlengethwa, Adolf Tega, Moffat Takadiwa, Turiya Magadlela, Cinga Samson, Georgina Gratrix and Zanele Muholi amongst others.  The exhibition will be on view at their exquisite gallery space in  De Waterkant.

FILM SCREENING William Kentridge: Mine (1991) * With kind permission from The Kentridge Studio.
A large scale charcoal drawing, one of eighteen drawings featured in William Kentridge’s important 1991 animated film Mine, will be displayed alongside a dedicated screening of the film.

Mine is part of the series Drawings for Projection and is included in numerous world-renowned collections such as The Tate, The Broad museum, Los Angeles, the Smithsonian, Washington D.C and Art Institute, Chicago. The screening provides a rare opportunity for audiences to not only view the film but to see it in conjunction with a drawing, providing valuable insights into the Kentridge’s unique working process.

INSTALLATION
Doreen Southwood: The Suspension of Disbelief
On view is a special installation of Doreen Southwood’s well-known sculpture Suspension of Disbelief – a poignant autobiographical work that permeates nostalgia and questions gender stereotypes amongst other concerns.
