Avoova creates beautiful and luxurious gifts, accessories, tableware, and objects d’art from hatched ostrich eggshells. Rob Burton, the new owner of Avoova, tells us about this unique project on the Sanlam Arts Round Up.

Rob Burton starts by focusing on the materiality of the product and how this beautiful story of Avoova has its origins in the Karoo town of Prince Albert.
Broken ostrich eggshells are collected from surrounding ostrich farms and taken through a process to produce Avoova’s extensive range of products.
Rob pays tribute to the local artisans, who have developed these individual, hand crafted wares that are now sought after locally and from abroad.
Pre COVID there were 65 artisans working on the Avoova range. Currently there are 18 artisans back at work and by year end there will be 32 to 35.

Rob also decided to consolidate at the Watershed at the V&A Waterfront. Avoova, being both unique and local fits into the Watershed with its focus on local design.Â
