Balekane Legoabe walks us through her exhibition at Ebony/Curated Cape Town, with Curator Christine Fortune, and tells us about her walkabout on Saturday 2 November at 11:30 at the gallery.
Listen to the Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30
Telling us what to expect, Balekane, refers to the exhibition as a showcase of what she experimenting with, based on her background in digital illustration and design. Staring with paper she has done digital prints and moved into traditional print making with mono-types. She has also started working on canvas.
The story and purpose of the work is reflected in the title Things That Are My Own. The work is a gateway of self discovery and exploration. The work is a means to an end – the process of going and finding out who she is. She is talking about nature, spirituality and identity – issues that she is trying to connect to and inviting other people to do the same.
Curator Christina Fortune explains how Ebony/Curated developed a relationship with Balekane. Her work was first shown in a group show, and on the Cape Town Art Fair. They felt that her output is distinct and unique – the reason for offering her this first solo exhibition in Cape Town. The exhibition shows her intriguing texture and sensitivity.
Balekane Legoabe is looking forward to the walkabout at 11:30 on Saturday 2 November, as an opportunity to share more deeply about her work and discover what other people see. This is an opportunity with artist and viewer to interact with each other!
