Exciting programme to suite all tastes!

The Baxter June calendar – and things are hotting up with a programme to suite all tastes and keep you excited to brave the cold and come to the theatre.

Baxter are thrilled about the world premiere of a brand new South African play, Imbilini..my friend! which makes its debut this June. The award-winning Mdu Kweyama (Shadow Boxing, The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?) directs two exceptional emerging talents, Bulelani Mabutyana and Siphenathi Mayekiso. Written and performed by Mabutyana, along with Siphenathi Mayekiso, the physical theatre two-hander is an ode to their friendship – powerful, potent and funny, it explores themes of trust, empathy and being the other. A deep and profound friendship is put to the test between two young men who must grapple with everyday issues of urban life, prejudice and society’s warped beliefs of albinism, beautifully told and portrayed. In keeping with The Baxter’s vision and mission of nurturing and developing local theatre-makers, writers and stories, this hugely engaging and compelling work was selected from a cohort of 10 creatives who attended The Baxter Masambe Playlab, a four-month long, writing residency which was held at the Baxter last year, and which offered writers time, space, peer-to-peer mentoring and financial resources to create new work, as part of the Baxter’s Platform for Special Talent programme. The play is developed and mentored under the guidance of Baxter CEO and artistic director, Lara Foot.
