Cape Gallery: annual wildlife exhibition

The annual wildlife exhibition at The Cape Gallery has always been a testament to the beauty and harshness of the environment.

Artists have often sought to go beyond a purely naturalistic depiction, viewing the self in relation to animals and the environment in both a physical and metaphorical sense.

The resulting artworks are often emotive and exhibit responses to behavioral qualities of the land and its creatures. Lin Barrie and Cobus van der Walt utilize movement and form to capture the mood and energy of the African plain, frequently choosing to focus on endangered species and the importance of conservation.  Jen Lewis and Sylvia de Villiers use colour to inject subjective characteristics into their subjects, projecting emotional responses onto the animals they depict.

Pause offers the opportunity to take a breath; to freeze a moment to observe the world around us.
