12 August: Young Artists Recital with Jordan Brooks (violin)
Jordan Brooks started violin lessons at the age of seven, and has risen to become one of South Africa’s most promising young artists. He received a full scholarship to study at the Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester in 2020 and is now in his first year at the Royal College of Music in London on a full scholarship studying with Radu Blidar and playing on a Claude Pirot Violin. He will perform with well known local pianist Tertia Visser-Downie in a programme of works by Schumann, Schubert, Hubay and Ravel. The recital will be followed by a short in-conversation with Jordan to hear more about his studies and experiences.
23 September: Cape Town Baroque Festival – A Spanish Salad
The Cape Town Concert Series is proud to collaborate again with the Cape Town Baroque Festival for ‘A Spanish Salad – Vocal polphony from Renaissance Spain’ featuring the Lutesong Consort. The aptly named genre of ensaladas (literally: salads) flourished for the largest part of the 16th century in Spain, but only ten survive today. These highly entertaining religious allegories tell of redemption from various natural disasters, and contain a mix of references to popular songs, chant and onomatopoeic nonsense syllables in a variety of metres. The ensaladas developed from the sacred villancico tradition: the singing of songs in the vernacular at matins in chapels and cathedrals on feast days, or as theatrical performance spectacles before the Mass.
Lutesong Consort will perform two ensaladas by Mateo de Flecha, as well as sacred and secular villancicos by Francisco Guerrero, Bartomeo Carcères, Juan de Encina and Cristobal de Morales. The vocal works will be interspersed with instrumental pieces by Luis de Milan, Luis de Narvaez, Alonso Mudarra and Diego Ortiz.
7 October: Between Friends
Talented musicians Gareth Lubbe and Luis Magalhaes will bring to life the musical friendship of three iconic composers Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms in a new programme- Between Friends. Gareth Lubbe, a consummate performer on the viola, violin, and voice, and renowned pianist Luis Magalhaes, will bring their talent and passion to the stage, delivering a performance that promises to be a musical celebration of friendship and musical genius, highlighting the musical connection between both musicians and composers.
18 November: Yevgeny Kutik – violin and more
The Cape Town Concert Series completes it’s season with violinist Yevgeny Kutik. With a “dark-hued tone and razor-sharp technique” (The New York Times), violinist Yevgeny Kutik has captivated audiences worldwide with an old-world sound that communicates a modern intellect. Praised for his technical precision and virtuosity, he is also lauded for his poetic and imaginative interpretations of standard works as well as rarely heard and newly composed repertoire. For this concert Yevgeny will present a programme of chamber music with the violin as centrepiece.
