Cape Town Green Map Interns do Red Bus Purple Wine Tour

To complete our discovery of the city of Cape Town, a wine tour seemed indispensable. Would the South African wine (that is recognized around the world) have more to offer than the French wine?

To answer this question we went to the Cape Town Tourism office to check out the “good plans” for the wine route. Having thoroughly enjoyed our day trip on the Red Bus Tour (see story) it is natural that we decided to do the wine tour offered by City Sightseeing.

So we checked the weather (which was not great the last week) and set a date for our tour. We bought our tickets for the Purple Wine Tour in the tour office of 21 Long Street. Remember that you can also buy your tickets With the agency of the V & A Waterfront or on the following website

The tour starts and ends at the tours offices bus stop. When making a stop you always have to present your ticket to the controllers (and obviously never lose it). On the bus the principle is exactly the same as the Red Bus Tour, a double-decker bus to enjoy the view and headphones provided to listen (in your language) to informed comments on the places visited.

This wine tour has 3 stops that allow you to go to discover the history of South African wine: Groot Constantia, Eagles’ Nest and Beau Constantia.

A must stop for us was Groot Constantia, many tourists and locals had previously advised us to go there for the beauty of the vineyards but also for good wine tasting.  With its 330 year history, the estate is  the origin of the South African wine industry. Historically it is also an interesting destination with Cape Dutch architectural features of interest.  So we went there. The landscape throughout the road to Groot Constantia was beautiful and different from what we have seen so far. The bus stop is on the main road so the area is located below and you have to walk about 5 minutes to get there.

We then went to Beau Constantia to do a tasting. This very charming place gives amazing views of the vineyards, this is a very nice place that we recommend to wine lovers (come in a group). The tasting included 5 wines (including one blanc, one rosé and three different red). It was a great time. Each new wine is served with a commentary explaining the main features of the wine will be tasted.

For a tasting go to Beau Constantia Tel: 021 794 8632; Cell: 082 459 0966.

As French we must admit that South African wines are good!

We spent a lot of time in the outdoors to enjoy our day it was very calm and relaxing.  The landscape is so beautiful that time seems to have stopped.

Purple Wine Tour offers other stops that we could not visit. There is just so much to discover, with other landscapes and other aspects of Cape Town.

It was a beautiful day.
