Water quality levels are within national recreational water use guidelines

Zeekoevlei, located in the False Bay Nature Reserve – City of Cape Town announced that all of the aquatic sections are now open to the public for recreational use.

‘Recent water quality tests show sufficient improvement to allow for intermediate recreational contact within the entire waterbody. The purpose of the closure that was in place was to safeguard the health of members of the public from compromised water quality detected within the Zeekoevlei waterbody due to Microcystin levels in the system exceeding the threshold for intermediate contact recreation. The City undertook continuous water quality testing at various points within the waterbody over the last few weeks and can confirm that the water quality levels are within national recreational water use guidelines,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

The City will continue to monitor the water quality at Zeekoevlei and keep the residents informed as the blue-green algal bloom remains susceptible to change based on environmental conditions. There is still Microcystis sp. present in the system and warmer, less windy conditions could result in higher toxin readings again.

All recreational users are requested to remain vigilant, to avoid scum formations and to practice increased hygiene after recreational activities.
