Cape Town will be hosting the South African leg of the World Sevens Series for the next four years, announced Exec Mayor, Patricia de Lille.
“Sporting events play a major role in our vision of becoming the events capital of Africa.
We are therefore especially honoured to be the new hosts of this event, and I would like to thank the South African Rugby Union (SARU) and World Rugby for giving us this opportunity.
The Hong Kong Sevens is the biggest regular rugby tournament in the world, attracting incredible amounts of direct and indirect investment, and we would like to follow in those footsteps.
The Cape Town Stadium has become a beacon of inclusivity within our city, and it is only fitting that this iconic venue play host to an event that unites people from across the world through their love of sport.
People from all walks of life regularly come together at the stadium to share their passion for the different events that are hosted here.
Now, people will be coming to the stadium to share in their love for rugby as well.
The December tournament in Port Elizabeth attracted a crowd of 63 000 over the two days of the competition.
We look forward to increasing the amount of the spectators into the City of Cape Town.
We are truly thrilled to host the Blitzbokke and the 15 other international teams that will be contesting the South African leg of the tournament.
We take a great deal of pride in our national team.
They have won the title during the past two seasons and we have full confidence that they will make us proud once more when they play here in Cape Town.
The Blitzbokke lead the current standings of the World Series.
I would like to wish them well for the next tournament, which kicks off next week in Hong Kong.
They have our full support and we look forward to welcoming them to the Mother City in December this year.”
