Casted and Diversity – Fibre Art are two new exhibitions at the Rupert Museum and Director Eliz-Marie Schoonbee walks us through these exhibitions on the Sanlam Arts Round Up.

Diversity – Fibre Art, as Eliz-Marie explains, is focused on texture and diversity. Texture is an important issue and the use of various media adds to that tactile presence, which makes it hard keeping visitors from touching the work. The range is impressive and includes a portrait in buttons to three dimensional vessels (see below). There are works that are traditional artworks to hang on the wall as well as those that have a heavily textured, sculptural presence.
This is an exhibition that engages at so many levels and invites you to re-assess fabric art. Lots of diversity to ENJOY!
Casted is an exhibition of sculpture by four artists that sets up new dialogues between contemporary and classical sculptors working in bronze.
The selection features a European Master, Old South African Master, as well as two contemporary South African greats and casts a view on their influences and styles from the traditional to the unconventional.
Käthe Kollwitz and Anton van Wouw represent the classic vision, yet are continents apart. This is beautifully stated in the two works at the start of the exhibition, speaking to their cultural identities. Wim Botha and Angus Taylor are the contemporary South African sculptors who are breaking boundaries and set up interesting juxtapositions and conversations between the works of Kollwitz and van Wouw. As indicated by Eliz-Marie, it raises issues about identity and what is identity?
Casted provides an opportunity for the Rupert Museum to show the works from their extensive collection in dialogue with these contemporary sculptors. The conversations are endless as Eliz-Marie indicates in her walk through of this impressive exhibition in terms of scale and content.
