‘Changing Faces: Profiling Portraits in South African Art’ is the first of a series of curatorial projects Alastair Whitton has introduced to the Barnard Gallerie’s exhibition schedule.
Who are we, and what do we in fact look like, are some of the issues that are raised. And who makes the image and the nature of the artist/sitter relationship is an ever present underlying theme.
The gallery has enjoyed the collaborative input from various galleries, artists and private collectors who have either loaned or consigned works for inclusion in the show alongside Barnard Gallery artists. The resulting exhibition subtley raises issues about representation by presenting portraits in many media and over an extended time frame.
The range is quietly impressive and well worth a thoughtful inspection.
Artists include Sanell Aggenbach, Deborah Bell, Joni Brenner, Marlene Dumas, Georgina Gratrix, Ryan Hewett, Robert Hodgins, Pieter Hugo, Anton Kannemeyer, William Kentridge, Maggie Laubser, John Meyer, Anton Momberg, Tracy Payne, George Pemba, Jaco van Schalkwyk, Claudette Schreuders, Mary Sibande, Robert Slingsby, Irma Stern, Roelof Petrus van Wyk, Diane Victor, Alastair Whitton and Asha Zero.
