The City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture Department will host its annual Arts and Culture Indaba at City Hall on 3 and 4 June 2014.
The Indaba provides an opportunity for the arts and culture community to come together to discuss issues that are relevant to the local industry and to engage with the City’s Arts and Culture Department.
This year, the Indaba will also afford industry leaders another chance to provide input on the City’s draft Arts, Culture and Creative Industries Policy following the conclusion of the public participation process.
Some of the gaps identified in the previous policy include the following:
- a need to support the sector through providing infrastructure, stimulating industry development, and creating job opportunities
- although viable, the industry is a challenging arena for new entrepreneurs, who require support, entrepreneurial assistance and market access assistance during their start-up years
- a need to ensure that artistic expression and beautification initiatives are able to utilise public space
The draft Arts, Culture and Creative Industries Policy aims to provide guidelines for the City to develop and support the arts and culture sector in Cape Town.
‘The policy aims to maximise the city’s cultural and creative assets and resources, celebrate our rich history and diversity in an inclusive manner, foster social cohesion, and support urban and community regeneration through the development of public art and monuments,’ says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Councillor Garreth Bloor.
