Mohau Modisakeng’s at Zeitz MOCAA and Chavonnes Battery Museum
This exhibition inaugurates an exciting partnership between Chavonnes Battery Museum and Zeitz MOCAA. Both museums will work together to present important exhibitions of leading contemporary artists from across the continent of Africa.
The Chavonnes Battery is the only place you can touch the sand of the original Cape Town shoreline that has been buried for 300 years. The partnership with Zeitz MOCAA will allow the Battery to act as a site for contemporary artists to create evocative engagements with site, space and time.
Mohau Modisakeng’s work deals with the symbols and mechanics of power—its abuses and achievements. Mohau Modisakeng challenges us to confront the tools of liberation but also of suppression. This exhibition brings together the largest body of work ever shown by Mohau Modisakeng including sculptures, photographs and videos. The exhibition is drawn from the permanent collection of Zeitz MOCAA, and private collections in South Africa and internationally.

Paula Vize, Peter van Straten and B. Ernest Manfunny at The Cape Gallery
The upcoming exhibition at The Cape Gallery opens on Sunday 11 Janbuary and seeks to present the works of three very perceptive artists; three very divergent points of view. The content of their work is familiar; the interpretation may or may not be overt or obvious – paintings and watercolours become, in the process, objects of subjective contemplation.
Paula Vize is an award-winning artist with an established reputation for her contemporary portrayal of traditional rural subjects. Her paintings are held in private collections across the British Isles as well as Cape Town and Dubai. Paula’s work has been included in permanent exhibitions with Stockbridge Gallery and House of Bruar, Perthshire. She has also exhibited with The Cape Gallery and Bell Fine Art, Winchester, UK.
B. Ernest Manfunny is a vagabond and recluse. He uses watercolour and pencil to explore the emotions and sensations we experience when contemplating the fantastical Universe around and within us. His gentle watercolours and delicate pencil works have delighted viewers at The Cape Gallery as part of the annual winter solstice exhibitions.
Peter van Straten is a veteran of 20 solo exhibitions and over a hundred group shows. He is one of South Africa’s best loved painters of esoteric and philosophical themes.
“Nothing ruins a grandiose sense of self like a hyperactive sense of irony. I am prevented therefore from uttering with any seriousness an ambition that is non-the-less heartfelt: to celebrate, with a single iconic image, each uniquely intriguing facet of human existence. I am driven by a deep sense of urgency in this lifetime to expand my understanding of the light bulb moments I am determined to illustrate.” – Peter van Straten.
