On view from Tuesday 14 December until 28 January

David Kuijers and Tania Babb invite you to The Cape Gallery and into the worlds they have created, and share with us a sense of joy and humour.  After two stressful years, and December upon us, we surely are looking for responsible ways to unwind and have a little fun

Using a cast of colourful recurring characters, both human, and animal, David Kuijers and Tania Babb animate their thoughts on the inter-relations between ourselves and others. Both artists vividly project their wonderful imaginations through their chosen medium.

  • David Kuijers

For David Kuijers that medium is principally acrylic on canvas, and glass and steel sculptures as well as lively mixed media pieces.  Let’s hear what David has to say about his work and his process.

“The seemingly arbitrary subject matter like a cat’s thoughts on dogs (and I have a cat that has been my constant companion and studio fixture for the past eight years) becomes the fibre of life – a child’s excitement at catching a two-inch fish. Through art I can again as an adult, share those unadulterated emotions for a while, go into creative free-fall – until of course the washing machine breaks. Yet, I can and will always get back to it, being in the fortunate position that saying “I have to work now” is the same as “Can I go play now?” I am licensed to escape, but I think the paintings themselves reflect this and pass a bit of that on to those who buy them.” – David Kuijers

  • Tania Babb

Tania Babb generally works with clay, experimenting with different types of clay, a variety of glazes, and decorative techniques. Her female figures are a celebration of freedom, and feminine beauty, while her charming animals are fun brought to life.

In her own words: “My work is about people. People and their relationships to themselves, to others and to animals. I use buttery porcelain clay, which I feel conveys the vulnerability of human flesh and the human condition. It must be said that there is humour in this exposure and the solidity of clay juxtaposes the lightness of spirit. try to capture, in the subtlest and most feeling way, gestures and movements that silently reveal inner attitudes. My figures are archetypal and recognisable in their frailties and strengths. I have great fun unleashing my imagination onto clay.’
