Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth cuts the ribbon

Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth cut the ribbon with Carol Weaving, RX Africa Managing Director, cut the ribbon to officially open Decorex Cape Town 2023.

The show is taking place from 22 – 25 June at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).

Hosted and sponsored by the City, this year’s event turns the spotlight on over 200 brands, including artists, architects, property developers, and experts specialising in various fields of design. There will also be two state-of-the-art theatres highlighting sustainable and experiential technology, and a bespoke kitchen where local chefs will showcase their favourite dishes during live demonstrations.

One of the stands will be from the South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI) and will feature several Cape Town smallDecorex Cape town businesses that participated in the Furniture Light Manufacturing Support Programme which was funded by the City.

‘Micro-enterprises from areas such as Delft and Belhar received technical and business development training that helped to prepare them for showing at an event as massive as Decorex, which last year welcomed almost 22 000 visitors and is expected to be even bigger this year,’ said Alderman Vos.

‘Decorex is a major expo that brings attention to local creators and provides them with a platform to connect with major clients from all across the world. At last year’s show, one of the entrepreneurs who exhibited at the SAFI stand went on to score a contract with one of Cape Town’s biggest furniture brands while another was approached by a tertiary institution to become a technical trainer. This is why the City supports events such as Decorex alongside programmes that upskill our entrepreneurs,’ said Alderman Vos.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) City of Design

As a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) City of Design, Cape Town has a growing reputation for strengthening the local and international design ecosystem. This also forms part of the City’s broader strategy to use events such as Decorex that serve as a key platform for creators to showcase their design skills, share experiences, knowledge and best practices within the creative industry. We have been supporting Decorex Cape Town for several years now and we look forward to continuing efforts to ensure the design community attracts investment that generates economic growth and job creation,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
