Meet Derek Carelse, MD of The Big Issue, on the Sanlam Arts Round Up

Derek Carelse, MD of The Big Issue, is the guest on the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio, and he focuses on Philanthropy, which is the focus of  the #317 edition.

Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm every Friday at 17h30

Philanthropy is the focus of The Big Issue, with Ian Kilbridge as Guest Editor. As Derek points out philanthropy is “good for South Africa”.

Derek first wants to tell us about the Noordhoek Art Fair that takes place this weekend and where Elaine Millin, who is the Art Facilitator of The Big Issue Vendor Art Programme, will be exhibiting the work done by vendors as part of this project. The work is always featured in The Big Issue (and on the MapMyWay and Cape Town Green Map websites) and available for sale.

As Derek points out, Corporate Responsibility plays an important role, but there are also many wealthy South Africans who individually make important contributions. And it is to these people that The Big Issue is reaching out to.

Some of the bigger Big Issue education and outreach projects includes The Little Issue. Did you know that 160 000 copies of The Little Issue is distributed to township schools?

Some of the social development issues include the collaboration  with skateboard artists – you can  read Creativity on Board on page 38 and see the photo above.  Derek also mentions that in this issue, 2 pages have been devoted to Vendor Art, with this month’s theme being “Stillness in Art”.

The idea of a professional showing of Vendor Art at the V&A Waterfront is also raised and hopefully there will be support for this initiative!

Real Johannesburg – an article featuring the photographs of Mark Lewis with text by Tanya Zack is mentioned, to remind us that The Big Issue is available nationally.

Thanks to Derek Carelse for this overview of the incredible work done the The Big Issue and for an  edition that provides lots of information to clue us in to the where you will discover the significance of the terms CPI and CPR!
