American pianist Derek Han returns to Cape Town nearly 20 years after he first played here with Yehudi Menuhin.

He will play the Beethoven Piano Concerto no 3 in C minor with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday, January 29, at 20:00 at the Cape Town City Hall in the 9th International Summer Music Festival.

The City of Cape Town is a proud sponsor of the ninth Cape Town International Music Festival presented by the CPO.

The CPO’s principal guest conductor Martin Panteleev will be on the podium with his interpretations of the overture to Wagner’s opera, Tannhaüser, and the Symphony no 2 by Brahms.

Han, who was born in China, has made an international career in concerto repertoire as well as a recitalist and recording artist. His CDs of the complete Brahms piano quartets on Brilliant Classics and Rachmaninov Concertos No. 1 and No. 2 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have received wide acclaim. Han’s breakthrough came in 1977 when he captured First Prize at the Athens International Piano Competition. He then experienced a meteoric rise, appearing with leading European and American orchestras and as a recitalist and chamber player.
