2015 Marks the 100th anniversary of Die Burger newspaper. To acknowledge this achievement, a number of events are planned by the newspaper, including an art exhibition.

The exhibition Die Burger – 100 years, opening today, 28 April, will be hosted at ARTSCAPE during the Suidooster festival.

What did the world, into which the Die Burger newspaper was born, look like? This newspaper described by notorious first editor of the newspaper, DF Malan, as “A child born of Hope and Sorrow”, was conceptualised first 1914 and finally published in 1915. In 1914 , the world was in the first year of a World War; The brutal collective devastation caused by the mass – dying of soldiers on the Somme battlefields were still to come.

‘Cultural Festivals are always difficult to curate, because you have to create a complex visual repertoire, for a diverse audience’ notes curator Sandra Hanekom. ‘I focussed on artists that I believe address “the heart, the mind and the soul” in their works and whose unique visual narratives always evoke a strong visceral response.’
