Bell the Cat, a solo exhibition by Hugh Byrne and Mpho ya Badimo Sesing ceramics exhibition by Frank Nthunya-Morai open at Ebony/Curated Bordeaux House Gallery on Saturday 23 November 2024.
Bell the Cat, a solo exhibition by Hugh Byrne, includes the launch of his book, the first comprehensive retrospective of the artist’s diverse creative practice.
Celebrating Byrne’s 10th year with the gallery, this exhibition launches a selection of new works by the artist while reflecting on the stylistic evolution of his career. This retrospective includes a selection of never-before-seen photographs and preparatory sketches by the artist, building a rich tapestry of inspiration and contemplation- an intricate creative narrative which underscores this solo showcase.
“There is a quality, or maybe it is even a fundamental characteristic, an essence then, about Byrne’s zestful and zingy work –work that never settles, is always shape shifting, continually finding new expressions, persistently embracing opportunity, frequently arguing with what a painting might be, and, more fundamentally, with what painting is – that brings to mind the Japanese word ‘asobi’. The word is widely used in everyday Japan, known to everyone, because it speaks to an ambition, if not pursuit, shared by all humanity: play.” – Sean O’Toole
Byrne relies on gut intuition and curiosity to establish a balance between spontaneity and discipline. Drawing on his studio space, tools, materials, as well as previous artworks as a direct stimulus for the development of new work, his compositions are a response to his environment. This exhibition lays bare this creative process, allowing the viewer to engage and feel a part of it.
Mpho ya Badimo Sesing ceramics exhibition by Frank Nthunya-Morai
EBONY/CURATED is delighted to announce the debut solo exhibition of ceramicist Sesing Frank Nthunya-Morai also opening Saturday, 23rd November 2024 at Bordeaux House Gallery in Franschhoek. This solo exhibition, titled Mpho ya Badimo meaning ‘gift of the ancestors’, draws inspiration from ancient African practices, particularly those originating from Nigeria, South Africa, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe. Each of the artists’ pieces undergoes smoke firing in a pit which adorns these hand-built vessels with spontaneous earthy patterning.
“The delicate, intricate patterns and meticulous artistry invite us to explore the details, while the strong sensual shapes reflect a sense of stability and presence. This duality captures our attention, but also highlights Frank’s talent for honouring traditional forms and techniques while presenting us with a fresh, contemporary perspective.” – Hennie Meyer
