Finding Refuge by Ruth Carneson will be opened at the Stellenbosch University Museum on 21 May at 11:00 with a discussion between Lionel Davis, Ruth Carneson and Deirdre Prins-Solani. Ruth’s book will also be available for sale at the event.
At fourteen, Ruth Carneson left South Africa on her own, clutching her teddy bear in one hand and a roll of her drawings in the other. In the UK, she struggled to reconstruct a life fractured by fear, but found much-needed refuge in artmaking. Her creativity helped her deal with the trauma of growing up in apartheid South Africa, where her parents had been harassed and imprisoned. In 1991, it was possible for Ruth to return home to South Africa.
For ten years she lived on Robben Island where she continued to make art. On Robben Island, Ruth found a safe place, a place that she could call home. Her art has been both a refuge and a way of making sense of the world.
