Fine Music Radio Benefit Gala Concert is a celebration of Africa’s only FM jazz and classical music radio station turning 30 and to raise awareness and much needed funds for the long-term future of the station.
- On Sunday 6 April at 2.30 pm, the Artscape Opera House will be turned into a gigantic radio studio where your favourite presenters will bring the music and voices of FMR to life on stage.
The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra opens the afternoon, conducted by Bernhard Gueller and they will be joined by FMR Bursary Trust Classical Music Award winner Esihle Mthetwa on flute and opera stars Lukhanyo Moyake and William Berger. The afternoon continues with choral performances from VOX Cape Town and Track 5, a ‘bon-bon’ from the Cape Town Baroque Trio, jazz from the Andrew Ford Trio, with FMR Bursary Trust Music Award jazz winner Gilson Amaral on saxophone, world music from the Cape Town Tango Ensemble, vocals from Penelope and Louise Howlett and classical guitar from James Grace.
- FMR presenters on stage will include Mike Mills, Rodney Trudgeon, Otto van der Walt, Mzu Maketa, Saan Mahomed, Nic Ciro, Penelope, Dragana Jevtovic, Graham McCulloch and station manager Eon de Vos.
In addition, the whole FMR team and full line up of presenters will be in the foyer during the interval and afterwards to meet and engage with the audience. The Kronendal Music Academy (KMA) will also be bringing their music to the Artscape foyer. KMA was the beneficiary of FMR’s community fundraising project in 2023.
Standard Bank provided a generous sponsorship towards costs associated with the FMR Benefit Gala, and in addition all the artists along with Artscape itself are donating their services, to ensure that the proceeds of this event all go towards the running costs of FMR.
