Lara Foot’s latest play, Fishers of Hope (Taweret), comes to the Baxter after well deserved rave reviews at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

Fishers of Hope, subtitled Taweret, a new South African play by the multi-award-winning writer/director Lara Foot, is a MUST SEE.

“Lara Foot’s new production sets a precedent which will be hard to match. It heralds a holistic, erotic and tactile approach to storytelling where music, lighting and subtle choreography mesh seamlessly to emphasize the character of the protagonists and the magic of their unique setting…… Fishers of Hope is unique theatre that stimulates pathos and empathy for the brave small people caught up in the corrosive wind of change.” Jaroslav Kalac – What’s on in Cape Town.

Dr Theresa Edlmann from Cue (the official festival newspaper) “… one of the ‘must sees’ of the Festival – thanks in no small part to passion, sensitivity and soul the directors, cast and crew have brought to this refreshing new piece of theatre.”

Gayle Edmunds from City Press , “The staging of this mesmerising work is in Foot’s usual style, using soundscapes, video and light to accentuate the sense of place, to support the actors’ powerful performances.”

Ismail Mahomed, Artistic Director of the National Arts Festival, “Fishers of Hope was an enormous success at our festival this year and it certainly got people talking. I am confident that the production will have equal success wherever it tours. Once again Lara Foot has affirmed herself as one of this country’s leading theatre-makers.”

The cast is led by Mncedisi Shabangu, who played the role of the storyteller in Foot’s Tshepang and also takes on the responsibility of assistant director on this production. The rest of the dynamic and diverse ensemble is made up of Cape Town dancer/performer Shaun Oelf, and Phillip Tipo Tindisa, Lesedi Job and Philip Dikotla. Musician Nceba Gongxeka creates the live soundtrack. The young children are played by Junaide Johnson, Azola Gola, Yomzi Tyali Masixole (all three were in Foot’s hit festive season production Scrooge) alternating with Makuxolwe Sigonya, Simbonile Matshaya and Kwanda Vuba.

Do not miss this powerful, poetic and pithy production that engages at all levels.  Beautiful to behold and memorable for its superb acting and ability to engage the mind and the senses.  Bravo to all!
