The FMR Take Note Jazz project on Sunday 27 August at Guga S’thebe in Langa is headlined by women in the forefront – a perfect tribute to Women’s Month.
Khayelitsha’s sensational singer Babalwa Mentjies, classically trained vocalist Jennifer Pau-Kakaza and one timer winner of the FMR Jazz Competition Carly Barendilla.
These women in song will be backed by a superb band, George Werner on keyboard, Peter Ndlala on bass and Dane Paris on drums. The repertoire will comprise of exciting South African jazz standards, own compositions by band members and a honouring song to legendary singer Sylvia Mdunyelwa who suffered a stroke a complications this year and is recovering.
About Babalwa Mentjies:
Babalwa Meintjies grew up in Makhanda and performs once again in her home town as a polished composer and a graduate of the UKZN School of Music. She now teaches and gigs in Cape Town and has shared the stage with many of South Africa’s top jazz musicians, including Feya Faku, Neil Gonsalves and Sazi Dlamini and has performed around South Africa and abroad. She presents a selection of loved jazz and South African standards. She will be singing songs from the South African Jazz Real Book and paying tribute to her all-time favourite South African vocalist, the legendary Gloria Bosman’s iconic music.
