The Cape Gallery opens Four SeasonsRoelof Rossouw’s fifteenth solo exhibition at the gallery on Sunday 18 October, 2015.

Roelof is particularly skilled at capturing the quintessential spirit of the small towns and farms he portrays.

Inspired by modern Impressionism, Roelof typically enjoys using loose brushwork and optical effects of dramatic light created in the mornings and evenings to convey shifts in atmosphere. This year, as a slight departure from his former work, Roelof has broken his hibernation cycle in his studio during the winter months to capture the subtle nuances offered by cloud cover and moody skies.

Roelof studied at the Johannesburg School of Art, gaining a national diploma in art and design and started painting seriously in 1992. He has since exhibited in South Africa, London, Cheltenham, Glasgow, Jersey, Galway, Armagh, San Francisco and Miami.
Artist’s statement:

“Every end of May I take my camera and Offroad and head for the valleys and mountains of the beautiful Western Cape. I love the warm shades of late autumn. Then winter arrives and soon all the leaves are gone and I stay in my studio. This year I accidentally discovered the beauty of rainy days, wet streets and grey skies.

Style-wise I have been painting a lot more with brush instead of palette knife and trying to paint less detail. This is not always easy, as most of my works need to be descriptive; the scenes are often of familiar landmarks.

There are many really good examples of modern Impressionism created by very professional international artists in USA, Europe and Russia especially. I believe there is always room for improvement as I continue to study the amazing works of certain artists.” – Roelof Rossouw
