It’s 21 years since Lizelle and Frank Kilbourn moved down to Cape Town and for this, the 10th annual Wegemeend Art Month, they decided the theme should be Cape Moments. The focus is on Cape based artists. The exhibition is essentially a selection of their own collection with some works borrowed from other private collections to provide an overview covering 170 years of what’s happened in Cape Town. Artworks reflect Cape nature and Cape architecture and events and political happenings over the years and up to the present.
As Frank observes, Welgemeend is a particularly special place to exhibit. The intimacy and character of the spaces makes for a comfortable and welcoming experience. He also expresses his appreciation to all who have contributed to make Art Month happen.
Frank hopes that Cape Moments reflect the Kilbourn’s passion for art and for making art accessible. He provides information about the walkabouts he will be conducting as well as the talks and events that cover the history of Cape Art and a special talk on the work of Peter Clarke. The Programme for 2023 August Art Month at Welgemeend comprises:
- Frank Kilbourn will offer four public walkabouts of Cape Moments/ Kaapse Oomblikke, on 5, 8, 11 and 18 August (R200 p/p).
- Virtuoso pianist Gerhard Joubert will perform a recital on 20 August (R300 p/p).
- There will also be a number of public lectures by notable personalities, including art writer and critic Amanda Botha and Strauss & Co lead auctioneer Bina Genovese. Wilhelm van Rensburg, co-curator with Frank Kilbourn of Cape Moments/ Kaapse Oomblikke, will discuss the history of Cape arts on 12 August.
