Frederike Stokhuyzen -paintings that are essentially paeons to nature

The Frederike Stokhuyzen Solo Exhibition will be opened by her daughter Lucette Torbet, at The Cape Gallery on Sunday 16 February at 4pm – and you are invited!

While Frederike Stokhuyzen has an easy rapport with her friends and her family who clearly love her and admire her work, she willingly spends long hours in her Camps Bay studio Bay painting.

There she can draw on a large resource of pen and wash sketches she completed by the roadside when travelling through South Africa or abroad. Selecting a sketch, she will mark it up on canvas with charcoal. Then, as she applies pure colour to canvas with one of her favourite palette knives her knowledge of design and mastery of oil paint quickly become apparent. Her paintings are essentially paeons to nature much in the same way a song or poem can be.

In choosing what to portray or omit, she finds and fixes the rhythm and balance in the scene she paints transforming it into an essential wholistic unity that can clearly be identified as her unique own style.
