“In May 2014 we decided to venture on a painting trip into the Kalaghadi and Namibia. Several years have passed since I painted in these areas, and I wanted a complete change of scenery and palette.
In the Kalaghadi the contrast of blue skies and red sands gave me inspiration. The dark clouds of an approaching storm altered the landscape drastically.
When we crossed into Namibia from Mata Mata, it was incredible how the scenery changed again as we made our way to Sossusvlei Dunes on the West Coast. We then proceeded north into Damaraland with its fascinating mountain ranges. From the Angolan border at Ruacana, we headed south into the Etosha Game Reserve towards Namutoni before travelling through Etosha, finishing at Dolomite.
Back home in my studio I translated the sketches into oil paintings in my usual palette knife technique. I really enjoyed putting this exhibition together.” – Frederike Stokhuyzen
