Few bands combine the new and the old with the aplomb of the legendary Brand New Heavies.

Pioneers of the London acid jazz scene, the Heavies are pretty much a British institution who have been cooking up a bitches brew of jazz, funk and soul for more than two decades. Forward, the group’s first album in seven years, finds them looking both forwards and backwards. Due out next month, it’s a self-reflective release that doles out uplifting, dance floor-filling soul with more mellow, funk-fuelled guitar and bass-driven grooves. Catch a preview when they take to the stage at this year’s annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival free community concert.
