Georgina Gratrix exhibition at the UCT Irma Stern Museum is titled The Cult of Ugliness and Nadja Daehnke, Museum Director, gives us the background to the title and this witty and wickedly inspired exhibition.

As Nadja explains, an Artist in Residency Programme is part of the museum’s 50th year celebration, and Georgina Gratrix has been working at the museum for the past three months.
Georgina was intrigued by the initial reception to Irma Stern’s work and as a consumate colourist herself, she related strongly to the work, which is reflected in the verve and vigour of the works on show. The exhibition is also cleverly integrated with the works on display in Irma’s Salon, while the upstairs gallery space is devoted to Georgina. Objects from the home, that inspired her works, are also on display.
The title – The Cult of Ugliness – will certainly make you rethink what is beautiful in the eye of the beholder.
What was not mentioned in the Sanlam Arts Round Up is the separate exhibition based on the education outreach work with schools by Nobukho Nqaba, Curation and Education Coordinator of the UCT Irma Stern Museum. Hopefully, these images will inspire you to take a look and be impressed by the works of these grade 11 learners from a diverse range of schools.
