The City of Cape Town has officially opened the newly upgraded Green Point Track, on the site of the old Green Point Stadium.
The multi-purpose facility now features a top-class athletics track, new club stand on the upper level, four changing rooms and a storeroom.
Speaking at the launch, Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille, said she hopes the facility will be used by all of Cape Town’s residents, and will help Cape Town become a major events destination.
The redevelopment of the Green Point Common started with the 2010 FIFA World Cupâ„¢ and the construction of the Cape Town Stadium. The nearby rugby and cricket fields and Green Point Urban Park also form part of the development, with the Green Point Athletics A-Track part of the second phase.
“This whole area was redesigned so as to bring people together to enjoy common spaces,” she said.
The new Athletics Stadium will be officially opened later in the year, and will have a seating capacity of up to 7 000 people.
The track and stadium retain part of the old stands and history of the original Green Point Stadium, but are also completely redesigned and updated, now providing access for the disabled. The architectural design is similar to that of the nearby Green Point Urban Park.
The Executive Mayor said the new athletics track will meet International Associations of Athletics Federations (IAAF) standards and will eventually become the centre of athletic activities in the province. It will serve the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Western Province Athletics and a range of other sporting clubs.
“Not only will these facilities be able to host both national and international level athletics events, the entire facility will be the site of activities like rugby and cricket. Indeed, more than just a place for sporting excellence, this facility will be a place where our communities can come together.”
This forms part of the goal of building an inclusive city by creating spaces where people can gather.
“As such, the Green Point A-Track and multi-purpose facility, and the whole Green Point development, is a place where all of the residents of Cape Town can come together and enjoy everything that our great city has to offer,” she said.
