Released in 1991, John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood was but one in a groundswell of rap-culture movies that hit the big screen in the early Nineties.
But what set this movie apart was its intimate and realistic tone, which critics hailed as “violent without being exploitative”. With its energetic dialogue, insistent street score and socially conscious message, it’s now considered a hip-hop classic. YOH! N the Hood invites revellers to revisit the film. As the flier puts it, “expect Ice Cube & Cuba Gooding Jr, hangin’ out, ratchet hoes, white people dancing, gold chains, snapbacks, bad bitches, twerking and hipsters getting along with them hoodrats”.
