Investec Cape Town Art Fair on Saturday, 19 February at 12 noon

Home Is Where the Art Is book will be launched exclusively by Zeitz MOCAA at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair on Saturday, 19 February at 12 noon, and will be available to purchase at the fair for R780 a copy, with 10% discount for members and HIWTAI exhibitors. The deluxe, full-colour volume can also be ordered online for R780 at shop.zeitzmocaa.museum from Monday 21 February.

This deluxe, full-colour volume records the making of and public responses to the Home Is Where the Art Is exhibition, a non-juried, democratic celebration of art owned and made by the people of Cape Town. Boldly hospitable and wide open in its embrace, this daring exhibition was launched at a pivotal moment in October 2020 as South Africans emerged from the enforced isolation of its first hard-hitting lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. For months, people had been confined to their homes. When the restrictions were lifted, Zeitz MOCAA seized the moment to celebrate the lifeblood of its existence: people and art.

The exhibition encompassed nearly 2 000 artworks by children, emerging and established artists, photographers, hobbyists and crafters, as well as masterworks from private collections. These works are included in all their multiformity and variance within the pagers of this omnibus publication, which features seminal essays by academic and cultural theorist Ashraf Jamal and journalist Neo Maditla.

Like the physical exhibition, the book has been curated into five themes seminal to the experience of lockdown: Relations, the Garden, Outside, Inside and Time. Through image and text, each theme is explored in both its literal and metaphorical dimensions.

Polyvocal in tone and all-embracing in spirit, it is a celebration of the creative spirit of a city in a moment of radical reflection and transformation. Home Is Where the Art Is is a love letter to art, artists and our city, Cape Town.
