In another light is a reference to that discursive internal revery and seemingly inconsequential flow of images, experiences and emotions that engage the mind at leisure. This is what the participating artists engage with in this new group exhibition in the new year at The Cape Gallery.
Day dreaming is not an academic pursuit nor is it logical. It is intuitive and deeply personal. These spontaneous and shifting images ‘in the mind’s eye’ do not reflect things as they are but how we would like them to be or how they could be. Compiled from memories and experiences, some have such a compelling potency that they engage the artist, causing him or her to seek to give them a presence and a context which can be inexplicable in words.
Through the processes of art making these thoughts coalesce and are given a context resulting in artworks are vital and that will resonate with each viewer ‘according to their lights’.
“Art is indeed the discovery and establishment of a new world of forms, and form is rational; but art is a continual
transformation of form by forces that are vital and irrational.” Ref: ART NOW an introduction to the theory of modern painting and sculpture by Herbert Read published by Faber and Faber Ltd.
