In Print/ In Focus presents lithographs by Lionel Davis, Patricia de Villiers, Randolph Hartzenberg, Garth Erasmus, Donovan Ward, Zemba Luzamba, Lizette Chirrime, Gabrielle Goliath, Jarrett Erasmus and Saara Nekomba, along with photographs by George Hallett.

The lithographs were produced by the artists during a two week workshop at the Michaelis School of Fine Art during November 2014. The workshop, organized by the Africa South Art Initiative (ASAI), was facilitated by Thembinkosi Goniwe, Andrea Steer and Stephen Inggs.

Hallett’s photographs comprise portraits of the artists, mostly taken at their places of work or residence. They build on his earlier, celebrated portfolio of portraits of artists, from his years in exile in Europe.

The artists, some of whom are well known, others emerging, constitute a diverse grouping. 50 years separate the eldest (Davis) and youngest (Nekomba). Between them, they have significant experience as printmakers, painters, sculptors, muralists, illustrators, digital artists, performance artists, musicians, textile artists, and mixed-media. Apart from Davis, who produced a series of lithographs at UCT in 1994, this was the first time these artists had worked with the medium.

The exhibition also features documentary photographs of the workshop by Scott Williams, along with online archives that document the artists, produced by ASAI.

The exhibition has ben curated by Mario Pissarra for ASAI. It will be opened by Ernestine White, curator of contemporary art at the Iziko South African National Gallery.
