Irma Stern – By the Sea @ Casa Labia Gallery

The Casa Labia Gallery presents an exhibition of Irma Stern seascapes on paper, curated by Christopher Peter.

“These rarely seen artworks have been drawn from the archives of the Stern museum’s permanent collection and present a view into her world of travel and exploration” explains Director of the Irma Stern Museum, Christopher Peter. “The Mediterranean coastline with its harbours and beaches, fisher- folk and boats, were of perennial interest to Stern throughout her career.”

Skilled observations of the form and shape of boats are juxtaposed with sea and land and interspersed by the movement of figures, all of which are imbued with a magical and compelling urgency of line. The exhibition includes several studies from her first trip to Madeira in 1931, which proved to be one of her most important emotional and visual experiences. Later works are centred on the movement of lithe bodies on the beaches of the fashionable South of France which she visited regularly in the early to mid 60’s.

This is the Sea – Group Contemporary Seascape exhibition

‘This is the Sea’ , curated by gallery manager Cate Wood Hunter, is a companion contemporary group exhibition featuring seascapes in a variety of mediums that supersede the representation of the sea, beach or harbour as a picturesque scene; but pose question as to how we see, explore, experience and disrupt this fragile environment
