The cool American Joel “Karabo” Elliot (JKE) brings his African jazz groove to Gugulethu at the Jazz in the Native Yards concert series on Sunday 27 March.
Born into a diverse melting pot American family of Jamaican, Scottish, German and Russian heritage, JKE who plays guitar, trombone, piano and percussion is also a poet who has found a unique voice in the world of harmony by weaving multiple languages with sound that is classical, jazz, roots and folk.
When JKE left his native America, he travelled to South Africa where he settled in the villages of Limpopo. There he discovered new sounds, collaborating with diverse musicians.
On Sunday he will perform with Nelius Nortje on guitar, Stompie Selibe on percussions Ntando Mbatha on bass with special guests; poets Thabiso Nkoana and Farrah, singer Nhoza Sitsholwana, Gerry Mbowa on drums, and dancer Taleszia Pillay.
JKE brings new breath from the villages of Limpopo and promises to take you on a personal journey to discover your roots and the awakening of your human spirit through his own compositions that encompasses various music styles from the African continent.
