Meet Jimmy Law who talks us through his evolution from vibrant portrait painter to his focus on astronauts and then into sculpture, and whose work can be seen at Jimmy Law Art in Somerset West.Â
Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30
Jimmy Law explains that he specialises in portraiture as he is “fond of faces” and people’s identity and how they express themselves. His intention is to grab our attention. The portraits must be engaging, full on and large scale.
During COVID he began a series of portraits of astronauts (see ‘Betrayed’ above) which he believes was a subconcious response to our “loss of identity” at that time – factors that made us feel out of the world as we knew it. He was moving and responding to the changes in this world.
The further development is his move into sculpture. It’s demanding, and challenging. He’s now onto his second work, which is life-size and he’s hoping to finish it this year. But he still has to keep on painting! So, he’s both blessed and cursed by being so creative – a ‘creative curse’, to find the time to keep moving ahead.
Best to head to Jimmy Law Art in Somerset West to see what’s new in Jimmy’s world of portraiture. ENJOY!
