Billed as one of Cape Town’s favourite Jazz musicians, Jonathan Rubain returns to the stage with a brand new show ‘How did I get here’ at the Baxter’s Golden Arrow Studio from 7 -18 April at 20h15 from Tuesday to Saturdays.
Following the success of Intimate Nights Chapter II and I’m in love with a guitarist both staged at the Baxter, Jonathan was recently seen in Love, Jazz & Duets performing alongside Don Vino Prins and the late Zayn Adam.
This time around, Rubain will be joined on stage by Nur Abrahams, Trevino Isaacs on piano, Lechester Williams – bass and Jason Ward – percussion. For the first time, in an intimate theatre setting he will entertain audiences and jazz lovers through storytelling of how music influenced his life and the impact its had on him becoming a multi-talented bass guitarist and jazz artist in the industry. He’ll share experiences, his love for Jazz and what he’s learned along the way that shaped his musical career as a composer and musician.
Constantly being surrounded by music while growing up, his journey began with mentors such as Mac Mckenzie and Hilton Schilder where he discovered his passion for playing bass guitar. Since then, his honed and perfected his talent as an artist, not only a bass guitarist. Over the years Rubain has been part of an exchange to Norway, having travelled to Reunion Island with the Goema Captains and twice to France, and in 2007 he also formed the Jonathan Rubain Band.
The show includes originally composed music, and will be performed in English and Afrikaans with some anecdotes that will make for an enjoyable evening.
Expect to see a different side to this musician as he gets up-close and personal with his audience and will leave the youth inspired for those wanting to follow in his footsteps.
