June Bam and Garth Erasmus, with words and music, bring us closer to delve into many of the untold stories of the Cape in their presentation at the UCT Irma Stern Museum.
The UCT Irma Stern Museum stands on ancient historical Khoi-San grazing grounds. This will make the event planned for Saturday 30 July especially significant. The museum welcomes visual artist and musician Garth Erasmus as well as June Bam, who heads the San and Khoi Unit in the University of Cape Town’s Centre for African Studies.
- June will speak on her recently published book ‘Ausi Told Me: Why Cape Herstoriographies Matter’. In this book the indigenous stories, visions and rituals passed down an ancient matrilineal line of knowledge-keepers are recognised once more as critical sources of knowledge, and physical and emotional wellbeing.
- Garth is well-known for playing his self-made instruments based on Khoisan indigenous knowledge systems, and he will perform both solo, as well as in improvisational collaboration with June.
Ausi Told Me: Why Cape Herstoriographies Matter serves as a reminder that popular history is not unassailable; it should be regularly questioned and, where necessary, challenged. The book makes a powerful case for a decolonised approach to exploring and interpreting southern Africa’s neglected past – in which the stories, dreams, visions and rituals passed down through the generations are recognised once more as critical sources of scholarly knowledge and physical and emotional wellbeing.
