The exciting Chinese clarinettist Junnan Sun (25), principal clarinet at the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, will give the next Cape Town Concert Series recital.
He will be accompanied by Elna van der Merwe in the recital at the Baxter Concert Hall on Saturday, September 17, at 8pm.
They will play a mixed programme of works – including the Saint-Saens and Brahms Clarinet sonatas as well as Kovac’s Sholem-Alekhem Rov Feidman! Sun will talk about each piece and why he enjoys playing them. Also o on the programme will be soprano Louise Howlett in Schubert’s vocal chamber piece Shepherd on a Rock.
Sun moved to South Africa in 2003 and in 2011 obtained a BMus Hons from the University of Pretoria under the tutelage of Lizet Smith. He continued his studies at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London, obtaining a Masters of Performance (specialising in orchestral studies) with distinction. He has won numerous awards, including first prize in the clarinet category at the Stockholm International Music Competition (2014); the Outstanding Young Artist Award of Jiangsu Province, China (2014); RCM Clarinet Prize which recognizes the top clarinettist of the RCM (2014); RCM Savage Club Prize for the best performance of a concerto (2014); overall winner of the RCM Concerto Competition (2013); and the RCM Rising Star award (2013). Sun was also overall winner of four South African competitions -the Unisa Overseas Music Scholarship Competition (2011), the Phillip Moore Music Competition (2010), the Unisa South African Music Scholarship Competition (2009), as well as the Lubner Solo Music Competition (2008).
He has collaborated with many distinguished conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sir Roger Norrington, Wolfram Christ and Gerard Korsten. He has performed solo and chamber music recitals in concert venues abroad in venues such as the Berlin Konzerthaus (Germany), the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, Cadogan Hall and St Paul’s Cathedral and has appeared as soloist with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the RCM Philharmonic Orchestra, and the South African National Youth Orchestra.
