Hurry to “The Difference Loom” at Iziko South African Gallery Annexe to see Keiskamma Guernica – a breathtaking artwork by the Keiskamma Art Project.

The exhibition is billed as a visual contemporary art exhibition exploring textiles and technology, but overheard at the opening was “it’s an exhibition of Keiskamma and the 7 dwarves”.

Everything pales as one confronts Keiskamma Guernica!  But having paid homage to this extraordinary, show-stopping piece, take your time to focus on the other works on exhibition.

“Textiles invoke our haptic sense, we feel it (visually), and in particular what we sense is the body”, comments curator Winnie Sze.  “This is evident in Keiskamma Art Project’s “Keiskamma Guernica”, where we feel the suffering of those dying of HIV Aids and their mourners.”

One is moved by the both the scale and complexity of the piece, which grabs one visually and emotionally.  You cannot help but be moved by the power of the message and the beautifully executed workmanship of the piece.

This exhibition, hosted by Iziko Museums of South Africa at the IZIKO South African National Gallery Annexe. Curated by London and Cape Town-based independent curator Winnie Sze, the exhibition showcases works by 8 contemporary artists, 4 are from South Africa and 4, from the United Kingdom, who uses textiles as a medium for social critique.
