A Makerthon is a two-hour activity program that guides participants through a process of design thinking and making.

The process is designed to be productive and rewarding, in transferring practical skills and collaborative creativity.

In partnership with The Shift & Friends, World Design Capital 2014 will host a Makerthon for 300 local learners (between the ages of 11 and 16) as a special program to the signature WDC2014 event to be hosted at Cape Town Stadium.

The Makerthon activities, on 17 and 18 October 2014, will include:

Sunshine Cinema Screening

The Sunshine Cinema is a mobile, solar-powered cinema that shares indigenous innovation and inspiration. The selection of short films selected for screening will include stories showcasing the impact of transformative design as well as videos demonstrating useful making techniques that can easily be applied to improve lives.

Pattern & Kite Making Workshops

These activity stations invite participants to explore their creative talent and making skills. The process encourages collaboration and expression. The outcome, a personalized, beautiful, hand-made kite that flies alongside at least 100 more, is bound to be exceptionally rewarding!

WDC2014 Walkabout

A guided tour through the interactive World Design Capital 2014 exhibition is set to inform and encourage learners to recognize ‘design’ in their every-days.

Kite Flying & Design Dreams

The ultimate experience of the day, Makerthon participants will get to fly their kites from the Stadium’s welcome terrace!
